Our newest intern gives us a glimpse into her life and tells us why there’s no place she’d rather be than Newgroup.

My nights are spent working in a bar to pay my way and reach my goals, while my days are spent studying full-time at university. There’s not much room for an extravagant social life, but the one thing that keeps me going is my love fitness and swimming; immersing myself in the water for hours on end, and eating proper nutritious foods, all to maintain the healthy lifestyle that I lead.

I’m currently training for a run that I will be doing in a few weeks’ time with my sister, and I’ve just picked up this internship at Newgroup marketing. A local patron in the bar inquired into my training progress on a previous shift, and when I recapped my training regime, he remarked “your schedule tires me too much even just thinking about it”. Yet, I had laughed and said “without that, I don’t know where I’d be”.

Simon Senik famously explained to an audience at TEDX that “people don’t buy what you do, but they buy why you do it”. It was in that moment that I really, truly understood that. You see, I had explained, there were some prior demons in my life that I found I struggled to overcome, and partly this was because I was living a very unhealthy, un-active lifestyle. I wasn’t focusing on me and what I had wanted.

Until it had reached a tipping point, where no more could be no more. As someone who doesn’t like expressing my feelings, it was suggested by a family member that I give boxing a go. So I did, and then I did the class again, and again, and again. Until one class turned into a gym membership and a gym membership had turned into healthy eating, and healthy eating turned into a healthy lifestyle, and a healthy life, at the end of the entire equation, turned into an entire healthy, happy person. And from that moment, I can’t turn back.

The patron stood motionless, a little startled that I would produce and explanation as such. But he smiled and said “so now I understand why you choose to live your life like this”.

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it”, said Simon Senik, which is why today, as I caught the 1 hour and 20 minute train from Campbelltown to Bondi Junction, I was content with my choice of where I chose to intern. Why Newgroup Marketing? Because here, I buy that they care about both customers and employees. Because here, I buy the knowledge that I will continue to lead the lifestyle that I do, in a place that I enjoy.
