Ever thought about digging into a meal BEFORE taking a picture of it?

“Itadakimasu!”
At the sound of chopsticks breaking, a chorus of voices can be heard expressing thanks for a delicious meal. That is how it was — with humble Buddhist roots, Japanese culture reserved a certain type of reverence for all living things, especially those that innocently gave up their lives to nourish another’s.

However in 2015, things are a little different. “Japanese” cuisine has become a pseudo-Asian food court staple, over-appropriated for the Western palate. With sushi vendors on every corner, one can become a little overwhelmed with the sheer proliferation of California rolls and tiny fish shaped soy sauces.
It’s refreshing to see then, the resurgence of fine dining with a twist. At the heart of Sydney’s restaurant stage is a place that redefines Japanese cuisine with French, and local Australian influences. Tetsuya’s, the coveted degustation destination tucked away on Kent St, is a unique culinary experience, designed to excite the tastebuds and satisfy humankind’s thirst for all things beautiful.

A few weeks ago, the Newgroup team was given the opportunity to indulge in the 10-course dining experience, courtesy of the wonderful staff at Tetsuya’s (it pays to make nice websites for nice restaurants – see our creation here). The night not only afforded us the opportunity to rediscover the essence of umami, but also re-ignited an appreciation for visually striking, yet delicately crafted food, not unlike a Bryan Fuller show.

So in this day and age of #foodporn and Valencia filters , why not take a step back and actually smell the flowers, instead of taking a picture of #nature. Virtual consumption via social media can only take your senses so far – and we guarantee nothing is more gratifying than taking that first bite into a bit of Marinated New Zealand Scampi with Walnut Oil & Egg.
